Genetic origin and mechanism
At least one functional Extension allele permits black pigment, while Agouti signaling, involving ASIP, restricts that pigment mainly to the points and leaves red pigment visible on the body.
Development and variations
The body shade may darken in winter or fade in sunlight, while the black points remain the key identifying feature.
Possible confusions
Very dark bay may be mistaken for black, while light bay may resemble buckskin. Buckskin, however, carries a cream dilution.
