Black listed coat

Understanding the Black coat

The Black coat: Solid black hair and mane, dark skin.

Horse coat colors depend on genetics, but also on visible traits such as mane color, lower legs, skin tone, and the presence of markings or patterns. The same coat color can therefore vary from one individual to another.

Family: Base color

Basic genetics: Black pigment expressed across the coat without visible Agouti restriction on the body.

Not to be confused with: Smoky black may resemble a standard black coat.
