Understanding the Buckskin coat

The Buckskin coat: Tan or gold coat with black points; cream gene on bay base.

Horse coat colors depend on genetics, but also on visible traits such as mane color, lower legs, skin tone, and the presence of markings or patterns. The same coat color can therefore vary from one individual to another.

Family: Cream dilution

Basic genetics: Bay with one cream gene: golden or tan body with black mane, tail and points.

Not to be confused with: Not to be confused with dun, which often has primitive markings.
