Diluted coat with primitive markings
Bay dun, also called yellow dun, is produced when Dun dilutes a bay base. The body is lightened while the mane, points and primitive markings remain dark.
A tan or yellow coat with dark points, a dorsal stripe, and often primitive markings such as leg barring.
The body is yellow, tan or muted brown with a distinct dorsal stripe. Leg barring and shoulder markings may also be visible.
Dun is linked to regulation of TBX3. It lightens the body unevenly while preserving strongly pigmented primitive markings.
Seasonal contrast varies, but a genuine dorsal stripe and other primitive markings persist.
Bay dun is often confused with buckskin. Countershading alone is not proof of the Dun variant.
