Trail Riding Horses

Trail riding horses include breeds valued for their endurance, sure-footedness, calm temperament and comfort over long distances. From forest paths to multi-day routes, a good outdoor horse must remain reliable, consistent and suited both to the terrain and to its rider's experience.

What makes a good trail riding horse?

A good trail riding horse does not necessarily belong to a specialized breed. Above all, it needs a steady temperament, efficient movement, strong feet and fitness suited to the duration and elevation of the ride. It should cope with varied passages and unexpected situations while remaining responsive despite fatigue or distance from the stable.

For long rides, rider comfort, recovery ability, economical feeding needs and suitability for outdoor living become important. On multi-day journeys, the horse should also be able to eat and drink in unfamiliar places, stand tied calmly and travel with other horses without becoming difficult to control.

Some hardy mountain, gaited and traditional working breeds are especially sought after for outdoor riding. However, the individual horse's training, experience and health matter more than breed alone when it comes to making trail rides safe.

Trail Riding Horses FAQ

What makes a good trail riding horse?
A good trail riding horse is reliable, enduring, comfortable and sure-footed over varied terrain. Its training, fitness and outdoor experience are just as important as its breed.
Which horse breeds are suitable for trail riding?
Many breeds can be suitable, including the Mérens, Henson, Haflinger, Fjord, Icelandic Horse, Camargue, Barb, Arabian, Quarter Horse and Appaloosa. This list is not exhaustive.
What qualities should you look for in a trail riding horse?
Look for a steady temperament, sound feet, regular movement, endurance, good recovery and the ability to remain calm away from familiar surroundings.
What is the difference between trail riding and endurance riding?
Trail riding is primarily about travelling and exploring outdoors, sometimes over several days. Endurance riding is a timed sport held over regulated distances with veterinary checks.
What temperament is best for trail riding?
A trail riding horse should ideally be calm without being sluggish, courageous, attentive to its rider and able to cope with traffic, animals, water and changing terrain.
Does a trail riding horse need shoes?
Not necessarily. The choice between barefoot management, hoof boots and shoes depends on hoof quality, terrain, distance and guidance from a competent professional.
Are trail riding horses suitable for beginners?
Some are, when they are well trained and experienced. Suitability depends mainly on the individual horse, its behaviour outdoors and how well its temperament matches the rider's experience, rather than on breed alone.
What size horse should you choose for trail riding?
There is no ideal height. A compact horse can be very effective, but its build must suit the rider, the equipment carried, the terrain and the duration of the rides.
How should you prepare a horse for a long trail ride?
Preparation should be progressive and combine aerobic conditioning, hill work, varied outings, familiarisation with equipment, rest breaks, suitable nutrition and veterinary assessment when needed.
Can you go trail riding alone?
Yes, with an experienced horse, a planned route and a means of communication. It is safer to tell someone where you are going, share your route and carry appropriate safety equipment.
How much does a trail riding horse cost?
The price varies according to breed, age, pedigree, level of training and performance. It may range from a few thousand euros to much higher amounts for particularly well-trained or well-bred horses.
Can a trail riding horse take part in other disciplines?
Yes. Depending on its conformation, health and training, a trail riding horse may also take part in dressage, groundwork, Western riding, TREC or other leisure activities.
