Equine Conservation
Explore rare and endangered horse breeds, their estimated populations, conservation status and the challenges linked to their survival.
Some horse breeds are now considered endangered . Their populations may be small, ageing, scattered or not sufficiently renewed. This page lists rare breeds featured on Horses of the World and links to their detailed profiles.
The disappearance of an equine breed is more than the loss of one type of horse. It may also mean the disappearance of cultural, historical and genetic heritage built over many generations.
Causes include agricultural modernisation, the decline of traditional uses, fewer breeders, economic pressure and standardisation in breeding. Preserving rare horses helps maintain global equine diversity.

View profileA breed may be considered endangered when its numbers become too low to ensure long-term survival. Risk depends not only on total population, but also on active breeding animals, genetic diversity, geographical spread and organised conservation efforts.
Rare horses preserve qualities that may be less common in highly widespread breeds: hardiness, climate adaptation, efficient feed use, endurance, pulling strength, specific temperament or suitability for traditional work.
Population figures may come from stud-books, breed associations, conservation bodies or official livestock records. These numbers should be interpreted carefully, as counting methods vary between countries and breeds.
Threatened breeds may suffer from low birth rates, too few breeding stallions, inbreeding, loss of economic relevance or the disappearance of traditional uses. Without practical value and visibility, even historic breeds may decline.
Conservation includes responsible breeding, maintaining bloodline diversity, documenting breed history, promoting breed qualities, supporting associations and developing new uses for the horses.
A breed with low, declining or insufficiently renewed numbers, often affected by a lack of breeders or limited genetic diversity.
Because traditional uses decline, agriculture modernises, economic demand falls or breeding communities shrink.
To protect genetic diversity, cultural heritage and useful traits that may benefit future breeding and equine management.
By supporting breeders, promoting awareness, joining conservation associations and sharing reliable information.
