Understanding Draft Horses
Draft horses are generally characterized by strong bone structure,
well-developed musculature, and a pulling capacity greater than that of many
other horse categories. Depending on the breed, their conformation may be very heavy
or more compact, but their historical purpose remains similar: to provide a horse
capable of sustained and substantial physical effort.
Their development was shaped by agricultural, forestry, artisanal, and industrial needs
in each region. Some breeds were valued for field work, others for logging,
urban traction, or hauling heavy loads over long distances.
Today, draft horses still retain cultural, historical, and sometimes practical importance.
They remain present in carriage driving, historical demonstrations, certain farming activities,
rural tourism, and projects that promote traditional working-horse knowledge.
