Stable mixture of white hairs
Classic roan mixes white hairs fairly evenly through the colored body coat while the head and lower legs usually remain darker.
A relatively even mixture of white and colored hairs over the body, while the head and lower legs usually remain darker. Unlike gray, the coat does not progressively lighten with age.
The body looks frosted or silvery while the base color remains visible. Injured areas may regrow darker and form corn marks.
Classic roan is a dominant trait associated with the KIT region and overlays chestnut, bay or black.
The apparent amount of white changes with seasonal coat, but the horse does not continuously whiten like a gray.
It may be confused with gray, rabicano or varnish roan. A dark head and lack of general progression are important clues.
